Coast Guard captain retires after 31 years of service

Assigned to the academy as an instructor, Ayer was selected in February 1986 to be a member of the permanent commissioned teaching staff.

During the course of his service at the academy, Ayer served as Assistant Dean of Academics, Associate Dean of Academics, Section Chief for Government, History, Ethics and Foreign Languages, and Head of the Department of Humanities.
