NEW LONDON, Conn. — One of the most senior intelligence officers with on-the-ground experience in Iraq is scheduled to speak during a luncheon at the Officer’s Club at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy here Tuesday at noon.
Charles Duelfer will be speaking about his experience with Iraqi leadership, the White House and the CIA.
Duelfer served as deputy executive chairman of the U.N. Special Commission on Iraq from 1993 to 2000 and was deputy head of the U.N. Weapons Inspections Team from 2003 to 2005. As special advisor to the director of Central Intelligence for Iraq WMD, Duelfer led the Iraq Survey Group who conducted the investigation of the scope of Iraq's WMD. The ISG was an intelligence organization of more than 1,700 military members and civilian staff who investigated Iraq WMD programs.
The final report from the investigation, titled "The Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction Report," is often referred to as the "Duelfer Report," and is available at the U.S. Government Printing Office website at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/duelfer/.
With more than 25 years of experience in the national security agencies of the U.S. government, Duelfer has been involved in policy development, operations and intelligence in the Middle East, Africa, Central America and Asia. He has been involved with U.S. nuclear weapons, space programs and most recently as a top CIA officer directing the investigation of Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Duelfer’s speech during the luncheon is in conjunction with the Coast Guard Academy Intelligence Development Program (IDP), which began in 2005 as an initiative between the Coast Guard Academy and Coast Guard Intelligence. It emcompasses intelligence education, training, internships, a guest speaker series, and intelligence guidance and mentorship across campus. The current Intelligence Studies academic courses within the IDP are housed in the Department of Humanities and offer courses for all CGA majors. A cornerstone of the program is a Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIRPNet) classroom, the only such facility at any U.S. service academy dedicated to the study of intelligence.
