14 candidates to be naturalized at Coast Guard Academy

USCIS to welcome new citizens during Constitution Day and Citizenship Day celebration

NEW LONDON, Conn. — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will present 14 candidates for naturalization to the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut during a ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy here Friday at 11 a.m.

The Honorable Warren W. Eginton, senior United States district judge, will administer the Oath of Allegiance to America’s newest citizens, including four military members during the naturalization ceremony in the Leamy Hall Auditorium.

Honored guests and speakers include The Honorable Warren W. Eginton; Capt. James Rendon, assistant superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy; and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadet Chorale.

This event is part of USCIS’s annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. More than 25,000 candidates will become citizens at 269 special ceremonies held across the country and around the world from Sept. 15 to Sept. 23.

The 14 citizenship candidates originate from the following 11 countries: Albania, Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Poland and St. Lucia.

The candidates reside in the following Connecticut cities and towns: Bristol, Hartford, Manchester, Norwalk, Quaker Hill, Southington, Stratford, Waterbury, West Haven and Woodbury.

Constitution Day is celebrated Sept. 17 in remembrance of the signing of the Constitution in 1787. Since 1952, Citizenship Day has been celebrated in conjunction with Constitution Day, although Congress first underscored the significance of United States citizenship in 1940, when Congress designated the third Sunday in May as I Am an American Day.

Media are invited to come early to speak to candidates in advance of the ceremony but should plan to be in place by 10:55 a.m.

Media partners attending should plan to show identification at the main gate of the academy and inform the guard you are going to Leamy Hall for the naturalization ceremony.
