NEW LONDON, Conn. — A former president for the Center for National Policy and a founding co-director of the George J. Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University, is scheduled to speak with the corps of cadets during the 7th Annual Class of 1953 Distinguished Fellow Keynote Address, Thursday, at 8 p.m. in Leamy Hall at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy here.

Dr. Stephen Flynn, a 1982 graduate of the academy, served on active duty in the Coast Guard for 20 years and is a leader in the fields of maritime and transportation security and is an advocate for critical infrastructure protection and efforts to build American national resilience. His lecture will address the need to move beyond conventional thinking in policy approaches to homeland security issues.

Flynn is also a former member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a past president of the Center For National Policy in Washington, where he developed and organized the historic 9/11 10th Anniversary Summit. Flynn is a frequent commentator and has appeared on Meet the Press, 60 Minutes, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, The Today Show, the Charlie Rose Show and has been featured in media outlets, including CNN and National Public Radio.

The Class of 1953 Distinguished Fellowship was created in 2005 through an endowment from the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1953 as a guest speaker program whose mission is to bring distinguished alumni and other persons of renown to the academy. Through classroom interactions, social events and an evening address, the program provides opportunities for cadet enrichment with a prominent fellow who has had “real world” success and unique leadership experiences in business, academia, government, technology or public service.

This event is free and open to the public. Any media interested in attending should contact the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Public Affairs Office at (860) 576-8724.
