A Cause and a Purpose: Remembering Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast leaving destruction, desolation and chaos in its wake. An event that tested the entire nation, it remains indelibly scored in the mind.

The Katrina rescue and response effort is among the most expansive in Coast Guard history. Over 5,000 men and women from every Coast Guard district in the United States participated in the operation, saving over 33,500 people from rooftops and flooded homes.

In honor of the fifth anniversary, the U.S. Coast Guard Museum and the U.S Coast Guard Academy reached out to those veterans of Katrina currently serving on campus and asked them to share their experiences. Here are some of their stories:
